Trezor devices share the Trezor Suite software ecosystem but differ in input methods, firmware capabilities, and physical durability. These differences matter when preparing a dormant unit for recovery.
Trezor One
The Trezor One uses physical buttons for PIN entry and confirmation. Its screen is small and monochrome. Firmware updates have continued through 2024, meaning a device last used in 2018 may require several sequential updates before Trezor Suite recognises it.
For recovery preparation, note whether the client used a standard seed or a Shamir backup (available on Trezor Model T but not on Trezor One). Trezor One supports BIP-39 passphrases entered via the button interface.
Model T
The Model T features a colour touchscreen for PIN and passphrase entry. It supports Shamir Secret Sharing for seed backup. The touchscreen is more vulnerable to physical damage in storage — cracked screens are common in devices kept in drawers without cases.
Passphrase entry on the Model T uses an on-screen keyboard. If the client used a long or complex passphrase, recovery preparation should include documenting the exact character set and any special characters.
Common dormancy pattern
Trezor One units purchased during 2017–2019 are the most frequent dormant devices we see in consultation. Owners often migrated to mobile or exchange custody and set the Trezor aside without verifying backup legibility.
Preparation recommendation
